Options Trading Journal for Trade Records, Planning and Review

Keep your Options trade plan, recorded prices, contract context, and decision notes together. Review what you intended, what you recorded, and the lessons you want to carry forward.

Record the Details Behind Each Options Trade

Options is a supported asset class in TradersMill’s shared trade journal. Record the symbol, long or short direction, quantity, planned and actual entry, exit, opening and closing timestamps, and timeframe.

Add strategy/setup details, entry and exit reasons, screenshots, notes, emotions, mistake tags, and lessons. Keep additional contract descriptions in notes so you can interpret the record later. Screenshot capacity depends on your plan.

Check Quantity, Multiplier and Trading Costs

Check quantity and the configurable contract multiplier against your contract records before reviewing calculated results. The multiplier defaults to 1 and can be manually configured. TradersMill does not automatically apply a 100-share Options multiplier.

  • Long gross P&L: (exit - entry) × quantity × multiplier.
  • Short gross P&L: (entry - exit) × quantity × multiplier.

Options use this shared generic calculation; premium receives no special calculation treatment. Enter prices, quantity, and multiplier consistently with your source records.

Record commissions and known fees. Calculated net P&L subtracts known costs and includes recorded adjustments; incomplete cost evidence can leave net results unavailable. Missing costs should not be treated as zero.

Plan Entries, Stops and Targets

Use pending-trade planning to save the planned entry, stop, target, quantity, and thesis before recording execution. A basic checklist gives you a place to review preparation as an idea develops.

Calculated risk/reward uses generic entry-to-stop and entry-to-target distances. It is not an Options payoff, maximum-loss, or probability engine.

Pending planning, planned entry/stop/target, generic calculated risk/reward, and basic checklists are included in Essential and above.

Document Your Thesis and Underlying Context

Write why you considered the trade and what you observed in the underlying security. Use thesis and notes to preserve additional contract details, the market context, and the conditions that would change your view.

Notes are narrative context, not dedicated structured Options fields. Call/put, strike, expiration, and underlying symbol are not dedicated trade-entry fields. For journaling the underlying shares separately, see the Stock trading journal.

Compare Planned and Recorded Execution

Compare planned and actual entry information with the exit, stop, target, and reasons you recorded. Screenshots and notes help explain changes to the plan during decision-quality review.

Choose Day Trade, Swing Trade, or Scalp to describe your approach; classification is user-selected. For intraday planning and review, explore the Day trading journal.

This is a record of your decisions, not broker-level fill analysis. Long/short direction does not provide buy-to-open/sell-to-close transaction semantics, and TradersMill does not execute broker orders.

Review Strategies, Mistakes and Lessons

Use the daily journal, weekly review, and performance calendar to revisit recorded results alongside strategy/setup details, emotions, mistake tags, and lessons. These daily and weekly review tools are included in Essential and above.

Ask what supported your thesis, where recorded execution differed from the plan, and what you want to practice next. Strategy/setup labels organize context; they do not establish multi-leg accounting.

Advanced analytics and checklists, Trade Replay, Setup Playbook, and setup analytics and grading require Professional or Elite. Trade Replay reviews stored trade evidence; it is not historical Options-market playback. View Plans.

Review supports reflection, not guaranteed improvement or profitability.

Understand Options Journaling and Import Limits

Import completed Options trade records through supported CSV/file import workflows, subject to the supported format and available trade data. Verify quantity, multiplier, prices, and costs before relying on calculated results.

The generic completed-trade CSV schema does not include a multiplier field; an absent imported point value defaults to 1. Supported formats do not imply arbitrary broker CSV compatibility or automatic Options contract economics. Broker Auto Sync is Coming Soon.

The journal does not provide structured multi-leg spread or rolling-position accounting. A strategy label or notes about a spread do not link its legs into an accounted position.

TradersMill does not supply live Options chains or real-time quotes, calculate Greeks or implied volatility, or provide assignment, exercise, expiration processing, or expiration alerts.

For help checking an import format, visit Support or Contact Us. Read the trading risk disclaimer.

Start with one Options trade: preserve the plan, verify the recorded numbers, and write a lesson from your review.
